Deadly Bird Flu May Endanger People

An outbreak of bird flu among migratory waterfowl in China suggests the disease which could trigger a dangerous flu among people may be poised to spread to India, Australia, New Zealand and eventually Europe, scientists warn.

If the migrating birds carry the H5N1 flu virus beyond its current stronghold in southeast Asia, it could devastate poultry farms and raise the risk of a deadly flu pandemic in people, experts said.

Breastfeeding Advocacy Stigmatize Moms Who Don't

Campaigns that encourage women to breastfeed may be doing more harm than good by stigmatizing moms who choose not to breastfeed, two researchers from the U.K. claim.

In an interview with WebMD, one of the researchers charged that the “breast is best” campaigns have turned a debate about nutrition into a “politicized moral crusade.” He says women often feel pressured to breastfeed and are made to feel inadequate if they can’t or won’t.

Scientists Decode Deadly Parasite Genomes

Three parasites that sicken or kill millions of people in the developing world every year have been genetically sequenced and are giving up clues that could be used to fight them, scientists said on Thursday.

The international team said they had mapped out the genomes of the parasites that cause African sleeping sickness, Chagas disease and leishmaniasis, which kill 150,000 people a year and cripple many more.

New Fetal Gender Test Raises Ethical Concerns

A controversial new blood test, which is being marketed to pregnant women, indicates the sex of a fetus five weeks into a pregnancy.

While the test allows parents to pick the colors for the nursery and baby clothes well in advance, it also has a darker potential: allowing women to get an early abortion if they don't want a baby of a particular sex.
