Peanut Allergy Vaccine in Development

An estimated 1.5 million Americans have peanut allergies, with 10,000 reactions each year.

In a new study at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, bacteria were genetically engineered to produce the three peanut proteins associated with the allergy.  The bacteria were killed and given to mice with peanut allergy.  After three doses, the mice did not react when feed peanuts.

Scientists are confident that the vaccine can be adapted for human use.

FDA Acts to Provide Better Labeling Information on Trans Fats

On July 9, 2003, the FDA issued a regulation requiring manufacturers to list trans fatty acids, or trans fat, on the Nutrition Facts panel of foods and some dietary supplements. With this rule, consumers have more information to make healthier food choices that could lower their consumption of trans fat as part of a heart-healthy diet. Scientific reports have confirmed the relationship between trans fat and an increased risk of coronary heart disease.

Food manufacturers have until Jan. 1, 2006, to list trans fat on the nutrition label. FDA estimates that by three years after that date, trans fat labeling will have prevented from 600 to 1,200 cases of coronary heart disease and 250 to 500 deaths each year.
